Hundreds of people bath in these Ghats along the Ganges daily. Some for religious reasons, some compelled by situation. There are not rules, no guidelines on how to use the Ghats. However, I have witnessed motions being repeated everyday with astonishing synchronicity.
Flower sellers at the Mullick Ghat flower market, taking a breather as business winds down around 9.30am in the morning with early morning rush of 6-8am negotiated through with major business concluded.
Indian weddings are generally over-stimulating for all your senses. Loud music, bright decorations, people shouting, things moving. It can be hard to find a moment of peace by yourself, even when you want to take a break. This photo steals one such moment from my close friends wedding, where a friend of his visiting from out of state, was trying to take it all in, sitting by himself, unaware of the heavy logistics behind his back.
In Mullick Ghat flower market, not every whole seller gets a shop. Few bring their flowers and stand in an area in the open, (which they have claimed with unspoken, unwritten contract with the rest, in a time shared basis by the rights of being a veteran of the trade) hawk their trade and give way to other at the end of their turn. Few don't even enjoy that privilege. They find a place, thats not occupied because it definitely not good for the trade and try to carryout their business from there somehow. This is the portrait of one such man. On chilly winter mornings, he moves under the bridge, dark and carrying the odour of old flowers dumped near by. He finds a gap with sunlight filtering through and uses that as his spotlight. The light, doesn't last more than 30 minutes.
Yogic Sangh is a yogic group from Kolkata with utmost dedication to their meet ups. I have been following the group for 3 odd winters now. They meet early morning at Maidan and are generally done by 7ish . The early morning yogic rituals are followed by some Yagna. This is captured during such a winding down yagnas.
Fluted glass panels are all the rage now. Can't deny they lend a solid dose of aesthetic to any space and fair bit of anonymity to those outside the enclosure.
One of my early shots that I cherished a lot. I like the anonymity of the scene. I have adored this frame and will continue to do so and use it as a reference point in my progress that I make from here onwards.
